WWE Monday Night Raw TV report (airdate January 5)

The Big News: Shawn Michaels is doing his best to resist the negative influence of JBL.

Show Analysis:

The show began with a phenomenal video package on Shawn Michaels vs. JBL. These packages are always great to the point it pretty much goes without saying, but this week’s package was particularly effective in putting over last week’s angle.

Chris Jericho and Randy Orton were in the ring to protest what happened last week. They complained that Michaels, in allowing JBL to…

Throwing in the Towel: A pro wrestling look at UFC 92

Last night’s UFC 92 show was quite the event. Although perhaps not featuring as many great clashes as the outstanding UFC 91, it was just as newsworthy, and certainly lived up to the hype. Martin Smith has already covered the show in depth, so I’m going to do something a little different and look at the parallels between the athletes here, and their pro wrestling equivalents.

Forrest Griffin’s Light-Heavyweight title reign ended in a manner similar to how CM Punk came across as a champion. A hard-working, likeable good guy, who everyone wanted to see in the spot he ended up in, was booked to go there quicker than most people felt he logically should. This…

Date: 09/08/08 from Fort Wayne, IN.
The Big News: Chris Jericho was able to weasel his way out of another tough predicament, but next week he has to face CM Punk in a cage match.
Show Analysis:
Chris Jericho came out to start the show. I think he will work well as champion, but they really devalued the title in the way they got it to him. Jericho revealed bruises on his body given to him by supposed good guy Shawn Michaels. Jericho pointed out their match was unsanctioned so Michaels accomplished nothing …

- Raw takes place tonight in Fort Wayne with no matches announced at time of writing. Its likely we’ll see where Chris Jericho’s reign as World Champion is heading and whether or not it will lead to a title match with Shawn Michaels at Cyber Sunday.
Coming out of last night’s PPV, you’d assume they’re still building to a CM Punk vs. Randy Orton match although it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to me if that is built up quite slowly. Given that Punk was taken out of the main event …

- The Sun have an interesting interview with WWE lawyer Jerry McDevitt online, looking at the lawsuit filed against the company by former employees Scott ‘Raven’ Levy, Chris ‘Kanyon’ Klucsarits and Mike Sanders.
McDevitt again insisted that WWE has no case to answer and was quoted as saying: “I think the key point to be made here is that every one of these people signed contracts acknowledging they were independent contractors.
“They contractually agreed that they would take care of their own health benefits and all the rest of that stuff.
“The IRS …

After a one-week hiatus, welcome back to my weekly (ish) look at Raw! This one came off a not-great-but-interesting-and-somewhat-fresh Summerslam, and was broadcast from CM Punk’s hometown of Chicago!
Tender Cuts (The tasty parts)
Booking Punk to wrestle Jericho in his hometown
Punk gained a good deal of momentum at Summerslam, and given Jericho’s current white-hot heat, this was a great choice of match-up to give the champion an extra jolt.
It should be noted that the bout itself was impressive. Punk’s unique counters continue to be a talking point. When he broke out …

- Raw takes place tonight in Chicago, IL with no matches announced at time of writing. Its almost certain that we’ll get a follow up to the fantastic angle from Summerslam last night involving Chris Jericho, Shawn Michaels and his wife Rebecca, while with the show taking place in the hometown of CM Punk, I think its a safe bet that the World champion will feature on the show.
WWE.com are teasing that we’ll also learn more as to why Kane has Rey Mysterio’s mask.
As always, we’ll have a Raw recap …

Date: 08/04/08 from Knoxville, TN
The Big News: JBL earned a title shot against CM Punk at SummerSlam, while Batista and John Cena captured the tag team titles.
Show Analysis:
Mike Adamle appeared on the stage to start the show. He had reading glasses on so he could consult and read off the script from time to time. That certainly isn’t a great vote of confidence in him. He was booed and there were chants of “you suck.” Adamle talked about a man who wasn’t taken seriously and wasn’t doing a good job. …
