Thursday AM news update: WWE ratings, Flair’s first shoot interview, international shows and more

Thursday September 4 BY Phil Lowe

- This past Monday night’s edition of Raw did a 2.9 rating on USA. A low number was to be expected as it was Labor Day, but heading into a PPV this Sunday, its not an ideal number to be delivering.

- Highspots.com last night announced they will be conducting a shoot interview with Ric Flair. The interview will take place in Charlotte, NC (Flair’s backyard and also where Highspots are based) and will take place over three weeks. That’s astonishing really.

I’m surprised Flair is doing a shoot interview, but considering a couple of weeks ago it was thought that Flair was being offered up to $50,000 to do a DVD, its not a huge shock. Regardless, it should be a great watch.

- Smackdown last Friday did a 2.3 rating.

- UK WWE ratings courtesy of Ian Hamilton: For the week ending August 24, Raw from August 18 drew 38,000 in the live airing at 2am (no change on last week), 55,000 for the replay on Thursday August 21 (up 5,000) and 27,000 for the replay on Friday August 22. Smackdown from August 22 drew 92,000 in its first airing (+34,000) and 61,000 on Saturday night’s replay (no equivalent last week).

- The Wrestling Observer reported last night that less than 6,000 tickets have been sold for this Sunday’s Unforgiven PPV. Unless sales pick up, there’s going to be a lot of free tickets floating around in Cleveland this weekend.

- The WWE house show in Aguascalientes, Mexico on October 17 has been cancelled.

- WWE have added a new date to next April’s European tour at the Geneva Arena in Geneva, Switzerland on April 24.

- November’s Randy Couture vs. Brock Lesnar fight in the UFC has been covered by just about every media outlet you can think of. We’ve got details of the fight over at MMAPreview.com. In the next week or so will be moving both sites to a brand new domain and expanding the wrestling side of things. That means as well as covering WWE, we’ll be covering TNA, Ring of Honor and other promotions in the United States and elsewhere.

- On the massive UFC 91 match, Jim Ross wrote on his blog this week: “This match will be huge for the UFC….Lesnar the brash, talented, younger bad ass who wants to be the man in MMA. Couture the beloved man of character who at 225 pounds fears no one and has displayed courage time and time again in becoming the UFC Heavyweight Champion… Couture will be the hero in this scenario as he will give up over 50 pounds come fight time and Randy likely won’t fight much longer while Lesnar is just getting his roll going.”
