Weekend news update: Hall of Famer suffers heart attack, Kennedy out for six months, Ross on WWE releases and more

Saturday August 9 BY Phil Lowe

- WrestlingFigs.com are reporting that WWE Hall of Famer Walter “Killer” Kowalski, 81, suffered a massive heart attack on Friday. The 81-year-old is said to be gravely ill. Our thoughts go out to a true legend and those close to him.

- Ken Kennedy could be out for the rest of the year after dislocating his shoulder in a house show match with Shelton Benjamin last week in Georgia. Kennedy noted on his official website that the injury happened when taking Benjamin’s finisher.

He wrote: “I basically landed with my arm stretched across my body. My body weight, his body weight, and the force that he applied in delivering the maneuver caused my shoulder to pop right out of the socket. I’m going to tell you right now, it was honestly the most painful thing that I have ever endured in my life up to this point. (Aside from watching a Great Khali promo.)

“I was able to get some relief in the locker room after being held down by two people while a doctor pulled, twisted, and popped it back into place. The pain immediately went from a 10 to 1, and I was so relieved that I actually started laughing.”

Kennedy noted he has visited Dr. James Andrews in Florida undergoing tests and MRIs.

He added: “Here’s the deal: I have a torn labrum, which basically is a muscle in the shoulder joint that holds everything in place. I also have some damage in the rotator cuff muscles, but it’s from the accumulative effects of being in the ring for ten years. I’m going to spend the next two weeks in Pensacola doing two-a-day rehab sessions.

“I will also be working out the other parts of my body that aren’t hurt by swimming, sprinting, cycling, leg training, and eating 6 nutritious high protein meals a day. After two weeks, Doc Andrews will assess my progress and determine if I have to have surgery or not.

“If not, I’ll have an additional 2 to 4 weeks before I can return to the ring. If surgery is required, I’ll be out for 4-6 months.”

- Jonathan Coachman appeared on ESPN News in the States yesterday, making his first appearance as an anchor since leaving WWE.

- Jim Ross has posted his latest blog over at his official website. On yesterday’s releases, Ross wrote: “Friday might not have been the best day for some wrestlers to answer their cell phones or home phones or Blackberrys or emails or even answer their front doors. Six individuals, at my last count, had been “future endeavored” out of the WWE which is never a good day at the office for any one involved.

“These are tough pieces of news to deliver (I know of what I speak) but the individuals who are released and their families are the one’s that are obviously the hardest hit. I sincerely wish every one who got bad news on Friday the best and would encourage them to persevere and not to give up on their dreams. Getting one’s “walking papers” isn’t the end of the world…take it from me.”

- Former WWE champion Brock Lesnar fights tonight at UFC87. We’ve got a full preview of tonight’s show over at MMAPreview.com and will have a full report as soon as the PPV goes off the air in the early hours of Sunday morning.

- On Lesnar’s fight tonight, Jim Ross also wrote on his blog: “The 12,000 plus that are slated to attend the fight in Lesnar’s present hometown will definitely be pro-Brock which can’t hurt a thing as it relates to Lesnar’s chances of not going 0-2 in the UFC. Lesnar can easily morph into a beast and a rah-rah, college-like atmosphere may facilitate that transformation which some might consider to be costly for Brock if he takes any unnecessary chances or tries to accomplish too much too fast.

“Being a Lesnar fan, I have plenty of concerns regarding this fight but I do think he will win and demonstrate how much his technique has improved since his debut. It’s really hard to see this fight going to the judges.”

Its certainly a big night for Lesnar.

- The Sun here in the UK interviewed ‘Million Dollar Man’ Ted DiBiase earlier in the week. Its a good read. DiBiase revealed a conversation he once had with Randy Orton, saying: “I told Randy Orton to his face: ‘Randy, you are a much more natural athlete than John, but you know why John is the number one guy and you’re not?

“‘It’s because the bottom line is that Vince wants to have the peace of mind that if he is going to invest all this money in this guy, he doesn’t want to have a phone call in the middle of the night that his flag-bearer has torn up a hotel room or done something else stupid and got arrested.’”
