Wednesday news update: Stone Cold to return, Unforgiven, Orton update, UK WWE ratings and more
- Following on from the announcement made on Raw regarding the World Title, Triple H will defend the WWE Title in another scramble match at next month’s Unforgiven PPV. The other participants have also been announced but for those who remain spoiler free, we won’t announce them on here until after the show has aired. If you’ve not read them yet, Smackdown spoilers are online at this link.
- Stone Cold Steve Austin is being advertised for WWE’s Cyber Sunday PPV on October 26, according to Phoenix, AZ’s U.S. Airways Arena’s website, which hosts the event. As you may recall, Austin served as guest referee for the Batista vs. The Undertaker match at last year’s PPV of the same name.
- SLAM! Sports in Canada have reported that Hall of Famer Killer Kowalski, who suffered a heart attack earlier this month, was taken off life support earlier today by this family. Truly sad news. Our best wishes to his family and friends at this testing time.
- As noted in the Smackdown spoilers, Takeshi Morishima worked a dark match for the second night in a row, this time going over Jamie Noble (I know, he’s a Raw guy and it defies logic even if it is a dark match).
- A number of wrestlers and employees at Raw on Monday and Smackdown last night were of the impression that Randy Orton’s motorcycle accident did indeed happen and that it wasn’t a work, despite the lack of (read: none) media coverage even local to where Orton lives.
- JapanToday.com have an interview online with Ed Wells, vice president and general manager of WWE Japan. Wells noted that WWE are looking to build business outside of North America and in Japan he said they would look to do that by firstly satisfying current fans in terms of content and secondly by moving into the entertainment side of things.
Wells said: “Our fans don’t consider us sports. They know we are entertainment and tune in to see a drama. All of our programming is storyline based with wrestling at the heart of it. I would say our competition around the world is not other pro wrestling leagues. Rather it is Hollywood dramas such “24,” “Lost” and “Heroes.”
“I think we have a very solid foundation. We need to start to attract new fans and give people a reason to try us out. I have no doubt that if they watch our content, they are going to get hooked. It is fun to watch. You can start anytime. It’s not like a lot of TV dramas where if you just tune in mid-season, it’s very hard to catch up. WWE’s basic concept is good vs evil and it’s quite easy to understand.”
- UK television ratings courtesy of Ian Hamilton: Raw from August 4 drew 42,000 viewers live and 41,000 on Thursday night’s replay (down 18,000 on the previous week). Smackdown from August 8 drew 62,000 for the first run (down 6,000), 45,000 for Saturday morning’s replay (down 1,000) and 40,000 for Saturday’s late night replay.
- Recently released WWE talent Stevie Richards is to reunite with The Blue Meanie and Mike “Super Nova” Bucci as the Blue World Order for a signing at the Legends of the Ring convention in New Jersey on October 11. The convention has a ton of names scheduled, including Ric Flair, Howard Finkel, Jake Roberts, Sunny, Raven, One Man Gang, Mr. Fuji, Jimmy Snuka and more. More details are available at www.legendsofthering.com.
- Jesse Ventura is in talks about hosting a daytime court show in the U.S that would launch at some point next year.
