Thursday news update: More on Raven/WWE lawsuit, Foley/TNA latest, another TNA star who could jump to WWE and more
- The Sun have an interesting interview with WWE lawyer Jerry McDevitt online, looking at the lawsuit filed against the company by former employees Scott ‘Raven’ Levy, Chris ‘Kanyon’ Klucsarits and Mike Sanders.
McDevitt again insisted that WWE has no case to answer and was quoted as saying: “I think the key point to be made here is that every one of these people signed contracts acknowledging they were independent contractors.
“They contractually agreed that they would take care of their own health benefits and all the rest of that stuff.
“The IRS has never challenged the treatment of our wrestlers and they have audited the company several times.”
He added: “This lawsuit kind of came out of the blue in one sense, but Levy threatened us years ago and I think I know who is really behind the whole thing.”
Its a very interesting piece and well worth checking out.
- ECW on Tuesday night did a 1.3 rating on Sci-Fi.
- Mick Foley appears to be heading to TNA once his current WWE deal expires on September 1. According to PWTorch.com, Foley has already agreed a deal to join the company.
TNA are certainly keeping things quiet in a similar situation to when a deal was agreed to bring Kurt Angle into the company. While I hadn’t heard for myself that a deal between Foley and TNA was agreed (and while he’s under contract to WWE it would be wise to keep things quiet anyway), as of yesterday the impression I got from speaking to somebody close to Foley was that WWE still had an offer on the table for him.
- Christian Cage’s contract with TNA expires shortly, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. WWE have always shown an interest in bringing Cage back and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he returns to the company rather than inking a new TNA deal.
- The word we got regarding Gail Kim is that money has been the major factor in discussing a deal with WWE.
- Jim Ross has posted his latest blog which you can read in full at this link. In his latest entry, Ross writes about John Cena’s surgery earlier this week and his visit to Smackdown just hours after the procedure had taken place.
Ross wrote: “Late Tuesday afternoon/early evening I am sitting in a make shift catering area in the old Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh going over my notes for Friday Night Smackdown that was to be taped in a few minutes. The catering area was essentially a ghost town as the ECW taping was in progress and others were getting ready for SD. I needed a quiet place to re-write my announcer notes and catering was it. Then came a tap on my shoulder. I turned to see who it was and low and behold it was John Cena….fresh out of surgery.
“I was shocked to see John, who had just had neck surgery earlier in the day, up and around much less dropping by the ancient Igloo to simply say hello to “the boys.” As I understand it, a disc in Cena’s neck herniated and a fragment stuck into his spinal cord causing obvious discomfort and numbness down his right arm and into his hand. Dr. Joseph Maroon, a renowned Neurosurgeon and Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the team neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers expertly handled the Cena’s repair. This was a procedure that Dr. Maroon called an “emergency surgery.”
“John’s surgery was a micro-surgical removal of a large piece of disc material that infringing John’s spine. Cena told me that the doctors took a small piece of bone from a cadaver to use for the neck fusion.
“Cena is expected to begin physical therapy next week and could be back in the ring in between 2-4 months according to Dr. Maroon.”
