Monday news update: Raw tonight, ECW, Scramble match updates and more WWE news and notes
- Raw takes place tonight from Wilkes-Barre, PA and for those of you in the United States, don’t forget that the show goes out tonight on Sci-Fi rather than on USA due to coverage of the US Open tennis. USA will air a replay at 11pm EST.
As always, we’ll have a full Raw recap up on the site early on Tuesday morning courtesy of Todd Martin.
- WWE will also be taping tomorrow night’s edition of ECW on Sci-Fi tonight prior to Raw going live. If you’re attending the show tonight and can help us out with a live report and results, you can get in touch at phil@wwepreview.com.
- WWE announced updated rules for the Championship Scramble matches that will take place at Unforgiven over the weekend. The new rules state that the entrants will be randomly drawn, with wrestlers that score pinfalls during the match being recognised as interim champions, but only the winner of the match will be declared the actual champion in the record books. More on the rules are on WWE.com.
- Jim Ross posted his latest blog over the weekend which you can read in full at this link. On the upcoming WWE Legends of WrestleMania video game, Ross wrote: “Yours truly worked several hours Friday night on the upcoming THQ produced video game featuring amny of the greatest the legends ever of the WWE. I presented the THQ rep a J.R.’s BBQ truckers cap, our $9.99 red neck special which is available here in our store, and he was most appreciative. Hey, some folks collect caps, what can I say?
“The creative on this game is being kept under wraps as it relates to all the amazing stars that will be featured. Nontheless creative fans will be able to book some of the greatest, dream matches ever. We are slated to do two more days of voice overs next week. To tell you that I am simply having a blast doing audio bytes for these guys would be a major understatement. This is the game that will likely encourage me to get video game friendly.”
I’m not the biggest video game player in the world, but I cannot wait for this. As the owner of a Nintendo Wii who felt extremely letdown by Smackdown vs. Raw 2008, I could be tempted to ask Santa for a PS3 this Christmas!
- Bill Goldberg announced on Friday via Fight Network Radio that he is training for a return to wrestling. I’d be highly surprised if his return is with TNA and I think a WWE return is almost certainly out of the question. Japan seems a likely destination although I wouldn’t rule out a one-off appearance with the Italian NWE promotion who recently brought Ultimate Warrior out of retirement for a nice payday.
- A friend of WWE Diva Layla El posted a message on her MySpace blog over the weekend, writing: “This is Renida. Lay’s best friend. She has been experiencing a huge loss in her life right now. Her mother passed away unexpectedly and she’s been out of the country dealing with everything. I wanted you all to be aware of what is going on and send out as much positive energy and prayer to help her get through this difficult time in her life.
“The WWE has really helpful and understanding with her taking a little time off right now but she will definitely be back in full force before September. This is the reason she hasn’t been on my space lately. If any one of you have experienced losing someone in your life who meant a lot, you know how she’s feeling and that it takes time to heal. I spoke to Lay today and she’s being strong for the rest of her fam, she also gave me the ok to write something to her fans letting you know what’s going on with her. She loves you and she thanks all of you for your support.”
- Vince McMahon turned 63 yesterday.
- Cherry will be working as ‘Cherry Pie’ on the indy circuit.
