Friday PM news update: Orton set to return to WWE as Foley set to leave, Orton on violence, Smackdown preview and lots more.

Friday August 8 BY Phil Lowe

- If you missed our AM update this morning with news on WWE going head-to-head with TNA on PPV and more, you can check it out in full at this link.

- Mick Foley has as good as revealed he is parting company with WWE later this month. In an interview with the Long Island Press, Foley said: “I can’t say much until after my contract expires, which is September 1st. But at this point, there is a good chance, through mutual agreement, that I will not be renewing the contract.”

There has been talk over the past couple of weeks that Foley is unhappy with the way he is being produced by Vince McMahon, which has been a recurring theme when it comes to announcers. The would appear to be the main reason behind Foley’s decision to leave, as he added: “Creatively, the announcing job wasn’t working out too well.”

- Randy Orton’s appearance on Sky Sports News here in the UK yesterday was pretty uneventful other than for him hinting that he could be ready to return sooner than expected. Orton said he would be backstage at Summerslam later this month and would be returning “very soon.”

Orton’s injury was originally expected to keep him out until around the start of October.

- While in the UK, Orton did an interview with Eurogamer to promote the upcoming Smackdown vs. Raw 2009 title. He called for more violence in videogames and said: “Violence sells. I want to see more violence in games - the more blood the better.”

He argued that videogames were the least of parents’ worries, when some “don’t know their kids are watching South Park,” as well as citing the example Goodfellas as evidence that movie violence could be far more shocking than anything in a videogame, calling Grand Theft Auto “just a cartoon” in comparison.

Orton added: “The violence [in Goodfellas] is against human beings. There’s rape in movies - you see all kinds of f***ed up s*** on film.”

Let’s hope any Daily Mail readers don’t pick up on those comments!

- Smackdown airs tonight with U.S Champion Shelton Benjamin vs. Jeff Hardy, Tag Team Champions Hawkins & Ryder vs. Jimmy Wang Yang & Shannon Moore, Triple H vs. Great Khali in an arm wrestling match, Maria, Michelle McCool, Cherry vs. Natalya, Victoria & Maryse, Super Crazy vs. Brian Kendrick, Jesse vs. Vladimir Kozlov plus appearances by Edge, MVP, Vickie Guerrero and more. Spoilers are available at this link if you missed them earlier in the week and as always we’ll have a TV recap up on the site either late tonight or early Saturday.

- WWE have hired Frank PR to oversee pay-per-view promotion and consumer awareness in the UK. The company replaces The Outside Organisation, who WWE dropped earlier this year but invited to re-apply for the contract.

- WWE has posted ticket info for the No Mercy pay-per-view at this link.

- The final rating for last weekend’s Saturday Night’s Main Event special on NBC was a 1.4. I’d be surprised if the show isn’t dropped as a result.

- Thanks to Devin Cutting for sending word that The Sandman, Tatanka, Eugene, Scotty 2 Hotty, Joey Mercury, Test and Gangrel will be appearing at the American Wrestling Rampage events in Bratislava, Slovakia on November 16 and Kosice, Slovakia on November 17.
