Wednesday news update: Lots of ratings news, former star speaks out and lots more

Wednesday July 16 BY Phil Lowe

- In case you missed them, Smackdown spoilers for this Friday night’s show are up on the front page of the site or at this link.

- Last Friday night’s edition of Smackdown did a 2.3 rating.

- UK ratings courtesy of Ian Hamilton: Raw from June 30 was seen by 48,000 on a replay on Thursday July 3 ( up 14,000 from last week)…26,000 on Friday morning July 4 (-8,000) and 52,000 on a Friday evening replay on July 4 (+3,000).

Smackdown from July 4 drew 71,000 on a replay on July 5 (+25,000)

Vintage Collection got 66,000 on Sunday morning July 6.

Other shows: Bottom Line from July 5 got 42,000; Afterburn (aired July 6) got 61,000; Experience (also July 6) got 43,000.

- From the figures Ian sent, I think its going to be well worth paying attention to ratings for WWE’s Vintage Collection show. Several years ago when WWE and Sky last aired older footage, it tended to do well. As I noted in Monday’s update, there’s been some talk of WWE looking to bring their 24/7 Video OnDemand service to Europe. If this show fares well in the UK, that can only be a positive for those wanting to access 24/7 via Sky TV.

- The guys over at WorldWrestlingInsanity.com sent the following quotes from a shoot interview they’ve conducted with Bryan Clark. You can head over to ClubWWI.com for details of their membership package which gives you 124 (and counting) audio shoot interview for download:

James Guttman asks Bryan about the end of WCW and whether or not he and Bryan “Crush” Adams figured they’d be back with WWE at some point. Was it something Clark was open to?

“I really didn’t want to go back just because of my experience up there. I didn’t like it at all. Bryan, he was real good friends with (Under) Taker and I think he pulled some strings to get us in there. But we also had the option of Japan because Bryan had a real good relationship with Japan because when he was in the N.W.O., he was working in Japan constantly. So that was, Japan was definitely our best option.

“But yeah, we went up to New York for maybe a couple of weeks. It didn’t turn out well. There were a few reasons that a lot of people probably don’t know about. I had been in a car accident - I don’t know - maybe two weeks before that. I had a herniated disc in my neck and I ended up going anyway….I still went, you know, just because I had an obligation to Bryan and we had been out of the ring for about a year. We were rusty, like a lot of guys who went there and were not ready. All they had to do was put us on some house shows, let us work for a couple of weeks, like they probably would have done most people. But they didn’t do that with us.”

Clark explains that Kronik worked one house show, one TV taping, and then they were thrown on PPV. He admits that their timing was off at the time but at least he was paid a year’s salary for two weeks worth of work.

“And then having to listen to Jim Ross’s mouth. I can go on and on about him. Nothing positive.”
