Huge Monday news update: Raw tonight, arrests made at Bash PPV, Ross on rumours and much more
- Raw takes place tonight from Mohegan Sun, CT with the fallout from last night’s Great American Bash PPV.
No matches are announced at time of writing, however we should start to get an idea of where creative are taking the brand in the build up to Summerslam.
Based on last night, I think its highly likely Batista will face Kane in some capacity on August 17, although whether that is in a singles match or as part of a triple threat match with CM Punk for the World Title remains to be seen. As always, WWE will likely change their plans a million times between now and Summerslam anyway.
William Regal’s 60-day suspension is now over, so there’s a chance he could return. I really like the idea of Regal being the one who tried to kill Vince and him getting his GM job back as a result of Shane and Stephanie wanting to restore order on the show. Unfortunately, I don’t see that being the case, and I really would be surprised if Regal is used in as high a role as he was prior to breaking WWE’s wellness policy for a second time.
Todd Martin will have a full Raw recap up on the front page of the site shortly after the show goes off the air.
- Two men were arrested at last night’s PPV, accused of moving chairs that belonged to WWE from ringside. A WWE employee was hit over the head with a bottle and then bitten on his back, according to Newsday. More details on the story are available here.
- As noted in our live PPV coverage last night, Umaga beat Mr. Kennedy in the only dark match of the night prior to the Bash going live. WWE also had Kennedy interviewing fans at the PPV for WWE.com which you can check out at this link.
- Jim Ross has responded to speculation linking him with a return to Raw shortly (where has that one come from exactly?). Speaking on his website, Ross wrote: “I read where many websites are reporting that there is allegedly talk that yours truly may be moving back to Monday Night Raw.
“As best I know this is nothing more than a weak rumor. No one from the WWE has mentioned the possibility of this matter to me in any shape, form, or fashion.
“If internet sites are getting this info from “WWE insiders” either the “insiders” are fabricating the matter completely or purely speculating. I speak with WWE decision makers somewhat regularly and this issue, actually non-issue, has never been discussed.
“I am thoroughly happy with having my “football weekends” off, except for PPV weekends and would be reluctant to leave a more wrestling heavy Smackdown to return to my old address.
“Obviously, despite my knee jerk, impulsive response when the draft occured, I am a team player and would accept any broadcasting assignment given me but I honestly don’t see it happening.
“Bottom line and in my opinion, it sounds as if some “insider” is spreading BS which is not a first.
“I am enjoying working w/ Mick Foley….we do not consider ourselves “the 2nd team” nor do we perceive we work on the “B Show”.
“Changes can always be made naturally but this one regarding me returning to Raw seems “highly unlikely”.
“Apparently the WWE is taping some SNME bouts in Washington D.C. Later this month and I am told the announcer assignments for that event have yet to be made.
“Perhaps some “insider” can expound on that matter as well.”
- Variety reported earlier today that WWE is to rename its WWE Films division, rebranding as WWE Studios as the company change direction from only shooting movies. WWE Studios’ Michael Lake, was quoted as saying: “We’re now in filmed entertainment, not just the film business. If we’re going to be in this business, we need to be in the business.”
- Jason Powell at ProWrestling.NET has the scoop on WWE allowing Evan Bourne (Matt Sydal) to use the Shooting Star Press as his finisher - a move WWE had previously banned over concerns it was an unsafe move. You can read Powell’s story at this link.
- WrestlingFigs.com today posted pictures from a signing session held by the Ultimate Warrior in Long Island, NY. With Warrior signing close to the Nassau Coliseum, which hosted last night’s Bash PPV, WWE sent some legal papers along, claiming Warrior was linking himself to the company. I can see both sides of that argument. You can view images from the signing as well as the legal papers here.
- The Undertaker, Steve Austin and Gregory Helms were in attendance at Saturday’s Affliction PPV.
