Friday news update: Tons of news and notes on Smackdown, TV tapings, Jim Ross, weekend shows and much more

Friday July 18 BY Phil Lowe

- Smackdown airs tonight with the show being buikt around Edge and Vickie Guerrero’s wedding reception. The following matches were also taped on Tuesday night for the show: Matt Hardy vs. Jeff Hardy, John Morrison & The Miz vs. Jesse & Festus, Mr. Kennedy vs. Umaga, Big Show vs. MVP, Great Khali, Shelton Benjamin and Vladimir Kozlov, Finlay & Hornswoggle vs. Hawkins & Ryder and Jimmy Wang Yang vs. Brian Kendrick.

As always, we’ll have a full Smackdown report up on the site courtesy of Mark Bright either late tonight or early on Saturday.

- Ahead of tonight’s edition of Smackdown, Jim Ross has posted his latest blog (which you can read in full at this link), and wrote: “Friday Night Smackdown is a unique broadcast and one that I am anxious to watch after the WWE TV folks finish their edits and production enhancements. The common thread that runs through the show is the “Reception of Edge and Vickie’s Wedding” which certainly seemed to have have its “moments” including the final few moments of the broadcast.

“We also had some intriguing wrestling bouts including a Hardy vs. Hardy match that completely surprised me as it relates to the direction the bout took. It will be interesting to see if any notices any of the announcer sound bytes that you may hear if they are not left on the cutting room floor.

“There were a few “beauts” as Mick Foley and I are working hard to make our broadcasts really fan friendly including not disregarding the past or the heritage of the business all the while attempting to add some topic info to the proceedings when it fits and can be delivered somewhat organically.”

- Ross also noted that he was originally due to call the play-by-play for last night’s FCW TV taping in Tampa, FL, but his schedule did not allow him to fit that in. Todd Grisham and Dusty Rhodes called last night’s show.

- WWE has a tri-brand house show tomorrow, (July 19) in Springfield, Massachusetts ahead of Sunday night’s Great American Bash PPV.

WWEPreview.com will have live coverage of the Bash this Sunday night with our live coverage getting underway shortly before 8pm EST/1am UK time.

We’ll also be posting our half-year awards over the weekend. Keep an eye out for them from Saturday evening onwards.

- We’re looking to bring another one or two writers for the site onboard. If you’re interested, drop me a line at phil@wwepreview.com.

- Devin Cutting sent word that WWE.com has confirmed that the next edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event will be taped with Monday Night Raw on July 28 in Washington DC.

- Devin also sent along the following note, which could indicate that WWE’s plans to tape ECW on a Monday night alongside Raw have been pushed back further than originally thought. It was thought that ECW could commence taping on a Monday once Smackdown changed networks later this year, but Devin sent along this:

WWE returns to the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina on Friday, December 26th, 2008 at 7:30 PM. Tickets go on sale Saturday, November 8th, 2008 at 10 AM. The WWE website has it listed as a Smackdown/ECW house show, so it appears that WWE’s plan to run Raw/ECW events has been pushed back again until 2009.

- The recently released Trevor Murdoch has started to take some bookings using the name Trevor Murdock (spelt with a ‘k’).
