ECW on Sci-Fi report (airdate July 1)

Wednesday July 2 BY Steve McLaren

ECW on SciFi - 1st July

We get a recap of the Triple Threat match at Night of Champions for the ECW title. Set to epic music, we see Mark Henry fly out of nowhere and splash Kane for the win. Mike Adamle informs us that Henry will address the crowd.

Mark Henry comes out all smiles, although not as happy as he was at Night of Champions. Henry claims he is the saviour of ECW. Dreamer and his buddy Colin Delaney make their way out. Dreamer says he isn’t here to congratulate Mark, but rather to challenge him. Dreamer goes on to put the belt over; he says Tazz broke his neck to win the belt (which was a lie, he broke it way before he won the ECW title). Henry says if he can beat him tonight, we’ll get his ECW title shot. By him Henry meant Colin. Colin accepts.

Our first match of the night is between US Champion Matt Hardy & Finlay & Hornswoggle vs. Chavo Guerrero (with Bam Neely by his side) & the Tag Team Champions John Morrison & The Miz. Miz and Matt Hardy work the start of the match until Hardy tags out to Finlay. Miz and his team try to corner Finlay but fail. Chavo gets caught up in the ring apron after a failed baseball side on Finlay. Young Hornswoggle dives off the edge of the ring onto the Tag Champs as we go to the break.

We return with Matt Hardy being worked over by the heels. Eventually Matt is able to break free and make the tag to Finlay. Finlay runs wild and knocks fools all over the place. Chavo is down and Hornswoggle hits the Tadpole Splash behind the refs back. Finlay hoists Chavo up for the Celtic Cross to get the win. Fine Match.

There is a long recap video of Night of Champions. After that is the Raw Rebound with the shocking CM Punk World Title win. Mike Adamle and The Tazz congratulate the ECW alumni on his World Title win.

Team Job are in the locker room. Tommy says Colin didn’t need to do this, but Colin was adamant that he had too. We cut to Teddy Long, Tiffany and some dude with a rocking afro. Long says he has signed this afro guy to ECW under his new talent initiative. Bring back the junior division Teddy! Estrada barges in; he says who is this afro dude? Long tells us his name is Atlas Ortiz and he is facing you [Estrada] next.

Ortiz (who is Atlas Da Bone from OVW/FCW) defeated Estrada in his first match. This was horrible. Atlas’ timing was off and well, Estrada isn’t any good either. Atlas’ gear was indyriffic, the dude wrestled in a pair of tracksuit bottoms and a pair Nike Air Forces. The crowd were dead for the whole match; this was one of, if not the worst match on ECW all year. The finish was a backslide. Atlas Ortiz doesn’t appear to have a finisher, maybe the backslide is! Atlas is pretty charismatic and does have a rocking afro so he has that going for him.

Up next was the Main Event between ECW Champion Mark Henry taking on Colin Delaney. Henry won. Colin tried to mountain some offense but was cut off by Henry and then killed. Tommy doesn’t get his title shot and Colin got his ass kicked. Sucks to be them.

It wasn’t a good episode of ECW, but it did feature one fine match, that being the 6 man tag. With the new talent initiative one would hope that more people will be bought up from developmental. Also the lack of Evan Bourne on this show sucked.
