2008 First-half awards: Worst WWE PPV of the year so far
Throughout the weekend ahead of our live Great American Bash coverage on Sunday night, we’re posting our half-year awards, looking at the best and the worst of WWE in the first half of 2008.
Earlier today we posted our awards for the Worst in-ring performer in the WWE and Least improved wrestler of the year so far, with more to follow throughout the weekend here at WWEPreview.com.
Our third award is for the Worst WWE PPV of the year so far:
Phil Lowe: Nothing has been truly awful so far this year from the E, but I’ll go with Backlash, which just shades it from Judgment Day and the Night of Champions PPV.
Mark Bright: Night of Champions. This was actually a real struggle to come up with something because all the WWE PPVs have either been really good or at least had enough fun stuff on there not to be considered bad. Night Of Champions will probably be my pick for this, even though they had two decent World Title matches and a really fun WWE Tag Title opener. So it’s not even that bad a PPV, but it’s just that WWE have done a decent job with their PPV shows this year.
Michael Campbell: Judgment Day. It genuinely wasn’t all bad, with some bright moments. But in a year of consistently mixed-bag affairs, this one had the most lemons, if that makes sense.
Martin Smith: This was a hard choice but I went for Backlash. I felt the main event was poorly built up, the women’s match was slow and Big Show vs. Khali was one of those typical big man vs. big man matches (i.e. it was crap).
Steve McLaren: Backlash. The show lacked any spark and is largely forgotten already. So much so on memory I could only remember two matches. It also had that horrid Big Show vs. Khali match.
James Mustoe: Judgment Day. There haven’t been any outright awful PPVs presented by the WWE this year. That being said, I would give this award to the Judgment Day event. This show, apart from the noticeable Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho match, was mostly comprised of rematches of sorts from Wrestlemania and Backlash, all of which were getting stale (see Undertaker vs. Edge and HHH vs. Randy Orton), or did not live up to previous matches (JBL vs. John Cena).
Jeff Hardy was still rusty in his second match back from suspension against MVP, and while Miz/Morrison vs. Kane/CM Punk was passable, all four men could be better utilised. Still, not a bad effort by any means, but the worst of a good bunch.
RESULTS:
Backlash (3)
Judgment Day (2)
Night of Champions (1)
