2008 First-half awards: Worst match in the WWE

Saturday July 19 BY WWEPreview.com

Throughout the weekend ahead of our live Great American Bash coverage on Sunday night, we’re posting our half-year awards, looking at the best and the worst of WWE in the first half of 2008.

So far on we’ve posted our awards for the following (click links to view our picks and reasons for them):

- Worst in-ring performer in the WWE
- Least improved wrestler of the year so far
- Worst WWE PPV of the year so far
- Worst announcer in the WWE (aka The Adamle Award)
- Worst feud/storyline in the WWE in 2008 so far

Our sixth award is for the Worst match in the WWE so far in 2008:

Phil Lowe: Big Show vs. Mark Henry vs. Kane at Night of Champions. This utterly sucked.Big Show looked great at WrestleMania, but since they did pretty much nothing. Mark Henry is Mark Henry and was thrown into this match at the last minute because WWE wanted to push him (yeah, sure). Kane is the guy who is always over despite being pretty stale for the past couple of years (something which is now hopefully leading to a nice new (or old/retro) gimmick on Raw).

This was never going to be a classic, but it could have been watchable. Unfortunately, none of the three seemed to want to earn their PPV bonus that night.

Mark Bright: ‘Hilary Clinton’ vs. ‘Barack Obama’ is the one that comes to mind here. Just an embarrassingly bad match and a stunningly boneheaded PR move for WWE to make.

They actually managed to get the presidential candidates to cut promos on this show (something which boggled my mind quite frankly), and then pissed that potential good publicity out the window for a horrifically bad “comedy” match on the same show.

Michael Campbell: Big Show vs. CM Punk vs. Tommy Dreamer vs. Chavo Guerrero vs. John Morrison in a Singapore Cane match at One Night Stand. There’ve been a few. But this one remains in my memory. Although nearly saved by Big Show’s comedy fall onto the ring steps, busting his eye in the process, it was a nonsensical waste of time. They had to reach up a pole, to grab the canes, to like use them- but the whole time there was a shopping trolley full of them at ringside!!! Argh! So yeah, other matches have been worse.. but this one gave me the worst headache.

Martin Smith: Big Show vs. Mark Henry vs. Kane at Night of Champions. Anytime we see a match when Big Show and Kane are standing in opposite corners, it tends to be poor. Add Mark Henry and the piece of junk known as the ECW title and we have the worst match so far this year. Poor buildup, a dire match and a pointless title switch. It won’t get much worse than this over the next six months.

Steve McLaren: Armando Estrada vs. Atlas Ortiz from ECW on July 1, 2008. Oh My God was this horrible beyond belief. Ortiz was just, boy, indescribably bad. They gave these two 6 minutes. 6 MINUTES!!! Neither are over and one (that being Ortiz) the crowd has never even seen before. I actually got offended watching it, just so awful.

James Mustoe: ‘Hilary Clinton’, vs. ‘Barack Obama’ from Raw in April. While marginally better than last year’s ‘Donald Trump’ vs. ‘Rosie O’Donnell’ affair, this was still an absolute bomb of a match, especially to UK viewers I would imagine.

RESULTS:

“Hilary” vs. “Obama” from Monday Night Raw (2)
Big Show vs. Kane vs. Mark Henry from Night of Champions (2)
Singpore Cane match at One Night Stand (1)
Armando Estrada vs. Atlas Ortiz from ECW TV (1)
