Wednesday AM news update: More draft picks coming later today, Raw rating news, Melina injury, Ross update and more

Wednesday June 25 BY Phil Lowe

- WWE will hold a Supplemental draft this afternoon which will likely see a number of midcarders moved around the three brands. I have no idea of who will be going where as I write this, and again, I doubt any of those switching brands know either. My guess is that ECW will do pretty well from this, but without any star power, that brand is basically developmental with TV right now.

We’ll have live coverage of the draft on the front page of the site from 12noon Eastern/5pm BST.

- We’re looking for spoilers from last night’s Smackdown tapings in Houston. Triple H was on the show, so any talk of him returning to Raw like the last time he was drafted appears to be void…for now anyway. If you attended last night’s tapings, you can get in touch with me at phil@wwepreview.com.

- Jim Ross also called his first Smackdown broadcast last night. After posting a blog yesterday stating he nearly quit over WWE’s decision to move him off Raw, Ross posted a follow-up blog late on Tuesday, writing: “Within hours of writing an emotional blog, I am positively moving on. I am going to do all I can to make Smackdown the best program the WWE produces. Working side by side with Mick Foley should be fun. It will be entertaining I assure you. Mick is a great friend and a man I greatly respect. The Smackdown roster is loaded with exceptional talent and the WWE wants the brand to grow and I intend to do all that I can in my role to facilitate that growth.”

I don’t think anybody has any doubt that a Ross-Foley combination should be good and be very beneficial to the show.

Ross continued: “The abruptness of the “trade” shocked me. I most likely responded in a non professional way in the eyes of some fans. That’s their prerogative and each has the right to their opinion, As do I. Not to be cliche, but wrestling has been great to my family and me. I owe it to the business to “man up” and to kick ass on Smackdown. That’s my plan.

“My emotions are what they are and I will not apologize for my candor or honesty. My feathers were ruffled…poor me. I still bring bona fide passion to every broadcast and fully expect to deliver come show time. As I write this I am in the midst of some travel delays, but I will definitely be in Houston and will be looking forward to “business picking up”.”

Ross, who as a result of the draft will not be calling next Monday’s edition of Raw, which takes place in his home town of Oklahoma, added: “I wish my good pal The King and Michael Cole great success but my professional priority is to help Smackdown kick ass. In more ways than one, “the game is on”.”

- Melina’s injury during the Divas match on Raw that led to Jim Ross and Michael Cole being drafted was not an angle, and Melina was taken to hospital on Monday night. We’ve got no update on her condition at time of writing.

- Monday night’s edition of Raw did a 3.4 cable rating. That’s not a huge success, although as with most three-hour editions of the show, the rating was brought down by a weak opening hour. In its normal time-slot (hours two and three on Monday), the show did a 3.7 rating.

WWE put out a press release last night touting the ratings success (or what they consider a success anyway), with no mention of the actual rating being given. The press release read:

RAW® Ratings, Web Soar

STAMFORD, Conn., June 24, 2008 - WWE® Chairman Vince McMahon’s weekly million dollar giveaway swelled the wallets of some lucky “Monday Night RAW” viewers, and the ratings for cable’s No. 1 regularly scheduled weekly telecast.

In the three weeks since McMahon’s Million Dollar Mania started, total viewership for Monday Night RAW increased 25% in its regular timeslot (9:00p.m.-11:08p.m. ET). For the past two weeks, Monday Night RAW, in its regular time slot, has been the No. 1 program on television among the coveted 18 - 49 male demo, beating all programming on both cable and broadcast networks.

The impact on WWE.com has been equally impressive. More than two million unique visitors came to WWE.com logging more than six million entries during the first three weeks of the promotion. Since June 2, web traffic to WWE.com has dramatically increased, 28% among unique visitors and 25% for page views, which now stand at more than 15 million per day.
