Edge and Triple H: who is the best heel?

Sunday June 29 BY David Bridson

It was almost inevitable. One half of the equation was standing in the ring on Raw while his counterpart was drafted to Smackdown.

Edge, arguably the best heel in all the WWE today, won the Draft concluding Battle Royal to gift Smackdown two draft picks. One of those two picks was prominent face Triple H, arguably one of the best heels of yesteryear. The two champions clashed in a war of words in the opening segment of Smackdown ahead of the Night of Champions pay per view showcase.

The entertaining altercation, possibly a tease for a later pay per view match, got this writer thinking: who’s the best heel out of these two established stars?

Many would say Triple H takes the accolade hands down. ‘The Game’ is immeasurable when it comes to promo delivery as a heel. He can provoke every possible emotion from both the live audience and the viewer to the point where they want to smash their fist through the television screen.

Although Triple H has spent some time now as a very successful face, he played an amazingly successful heel back in the day. As part of the McMahon-Helmsley regime back in 2000, he collided with Mick Foley in a programme which lead to Foley’s ‘retirement’ at No Way Out. He clashed with the likes of Chris Jericho and The Rock later in the year and perhaps most noticeably, was revealed as one of the men who ran down top fan favourite ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin.

Fast forward a few years and as leader of Evolution, a group who would do anything to ensure he remained World Heavyweight Champion, Triple H held on to the title by the slightest of margins for many months. The self proclaimed ‘King of Kings’ has it all in the heel department. He can cut hurtful promos and wrestle his matches in such a way that he becomes the most despised character in the company. Any guy who helps run over Steve Austin surely qualifies for number one heel?

But Edge would have something to say about The Game’s credentials. As a former tag team champion, he has cut an impressive niche as a hated character the fans simply cannot bare to see win. The Toronto native has starred in fascinating feuds with John Cena, Matt Hardy and The Undertaker, among others.

Currently aligned with La Familia, who have, much like Evolution, been on hand to help Edge whenever he needs it, there are multiple reasons to hate the man. He has become a serious threat on Smackdown, regardless of whether he is champion or challenger. His ultimate opportunist moniker, which partly came about simply because he was in the right place at the right time following injuries to Mr Kennedy and The Undertaker, has helped position him as a solid heel. Every time you think Edge has done all he can to add to his character, he does more.

His victory over with The Undertaker at One Night Stand has propelled him to new heights as fans can’t bare a WWE without ‘Taker. Edge has truly solidified himself in a role it seems he was born to play. He has just as much, if not more, of a case than Triple H to be crowned the best heel between the two.

Should the pair clash in a match, it would be a shame that one would probably have to play the fan favourite. At the moment it certainly seems Triple H, currently one of the most popular WWE Superstars, would have to take that role. That being said, it would be awesome to see Triple H, backed up by his own stable, taking on Edge and La Familia. There are so many directions a battle between them could go in.

Right now, it seems a dead cert they will take each other on after the seeds for a feud were seemingly planted on Smackdown. No WWE fan would turn down seeing these two fight it out, regardless of what role they play. Critics always argue matches between heels can’t work. If anyone’s going to disprove that theory, it’s Edge and Triple H. Fans could find a way to get in to a match between the pair on star power alone, especially if it’s held in Greenwich or Toronto. A bout between the pair is WrestleMania material.

But on paper I have to say Triple H edges it as best heel. He has always been the yardstick as far as bad guys go. Who’s to say Edge hasn’t studied him and added parts of Triple H’s act in to his own? Triple H has it all in the heels department.

He can talk, wrestle and provoke emotions from both the live crowd and those sitting at home. Edge is good, possibly even great but not as great as Triple H. He excels at every skill, just not quite as well as Triple H.

‘The Game’ is my pick for best heel, at least for now.
